Established in 2013, the Interdisciplinary Research Laboratory in Life Cycle Assessment and Circular Economy (LIRIDE) expertise focus on life cycle thinking and assessment. Internationally recognized for its solid scientific research, the LIRIDE research group supports the industry, SMEs, governments, and organizations in their path towards a truly sustainable development supported by life cycle assessment and circular economy.
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
To consider all stages of the product life cycle; from the extraction of materials to its end of life (as well as its reuse, recycling, energy recovery, or disposal).
LCA also allows the quantification of environmental impacts such as:
Damage on the ecosystem
Damage on human health, etc.
Circular economy aims to solve two problems of our actual way of consuming :
the increased resources exploitation
the waste generation and accumulation
In order to do so, it proposes to optimise the loops along the life cycle of a product or service adopting, for instance, practices like :
maintenance and repair
Carbon footprint and Water footprint
The carbon footprint and water footprint focus on quantifying a single environmental impact - Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and the use of the water resource, whether it is for a product or a service.
Different tools and standards (e.g. PAS 2050, ISO 14064, Greenhouse Gas Protocol and ISO 14046) are available for these single-criteria analyzes.
It is important to note that data collection effort to achieve the carbon footprint, water footprint or LCA is almost similar.
Development of LCA tools
LCA, depending on its complexity, requires a lot of resources and above all requires very specific expertise.
To ensure an easy use for the partner, LIRIDE develops easy-to-use LCA tools based on robust LCA data.
You no longer have to make investments in software, databases, etc.
In addition, the use of these tools does not require a specific level of expertise (e.g. basic knowledge of Excel).
